RI'S Q1 EXPORTS TO HONG KONG UP 10 PCT

Beijing, July 20 (ANTARA) - Indonesia's exports to Hong Kong in the first quarter of 2008 rose 10.52 percent to US$727.30 million from US$658.07 million a year earlier.
But Indonesia's imports from Hong Kong in the January-March 2008 period jumped 25.46 percent to US$663.55 million from US$528.90 million in the same period last year, causing Indonesia's surplus in its trade with the territory to fall 65.74 percent to US$63.74 million from US$129.17 million, the Indonesian trade consul based in Hong Kong, Haris Munandar, said in a statement on Sunday.
A rise in the export of Indonesia's key commodities, including coal, electronics, crude palm oil (CPO) and pearl contributed to the increase in the first-quarter exports, the statement said.
Coal exports increased 28.23 percent to US$197.76 million from US$154.22 million, electronics and recording materials 128.79 percent to US$70.85 million from US$30.97 million, CPO 164.66 percent to US$14.06 million from US$5.31 million and pearl 10.09 percent to US$10.47 million from US$9.51 million.
He said his side was currently conducting trade promotion campaigns to increase Indonesia's exports to Hong Kong and Macau.
The promotion campaigns included Link Indonesia Festival held at five department stores in Hong Kong on May 1-June 1, Macao Catalogue Show on July 14-25, Indonesia Festival at the Ocean Park
on August 14-25, Indonesia Bazaar at Yue Hwa Department Store from October 29 to late Nomber and World SME Expo 2008 on December 10-12, he said.
He said two-way trade between Indonesia and Hong Kong showed an upward trend in the past five years.
Hong Kong's imports from Indonesia rose by an average of 6.95 percent in each of the past five years, namely US$1.55 billion in 2003, US$1.74 billion in 2004, US$1.92 billion in 2005, US$1.91 billion in 2006 and US$2.07 billion in 2007.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong's exports to Indonesia over the period increased by an average of 15.57 percent, namely US$998.18 million in 2003, US$1.10 billion in 2004, US$1.26 billion in 2005, US$1.42 billion in 2006 and US$1.81 billion in 2007.
