Two suspects in Bhumjaithai party headquarters bombing incident taken to Bangkok
BANGKOK, July 5 - Thai police on Monday escorted two suspects in last month's Bhumjaithai party headquarters bombing incident--Warisriya Boonsom, Korbchai Boonplod----back to Bangkok from Cambodia. Both deny involvement in the case.
Mrs Warisriya and Mr Korbchai were accused by the two suspects earlier arrested that they were involved in the plot to bomb the government coalition partner Bhumjaithai party headquarters last month.
Assistant police chief Pol Lt-Gen Aswin Kwanmuang who heads the case investigation team and Central Investigation Bureau Deputy Commissioner Pol Maj-Gen Panya Mamen flew to Phnom Penh early today to bring the suspects back to Thailand after they were detained by Cambodian authorities in Siem Reap province.
The Cambodian authorities turned them over to the Thai embassy earlier today and embassy officials handed them on to Gen Aswin's team at the airport.
The police and the detainees arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport at 11am.
Gen. Panya told reporters upon arrival that the suspects had given good cooperation but more questioning is needed for more information.
The reporters said the duo appeared stressed while Mrs Warisriya cried and denied involvement in the incident and asked for fair treatment.
The two suspects were taken to National Police Bureau headquarters for questioning and a press conference which is expected later today.
Department of Special Investigation (DSI) director-general Tharit Pengdit said the agency had coordinated with Gen Aswin as the case is already treated as a special case under the responsibility of the DSI.
Mr Tharit said DSI will bring them to seek court permission to detain them for further investigation.
Police in Thailand’s eastern province of Sa Kaeo on Sunday were notified by the Thai consulate in Phnom Penh that Cambodian police arrested Mrs Warisriya and Mr Korbchai in Siem Reap. They fled to Cambodia on June 23.
The two are suspects in the hiring of persons to carry out a planned bombing near the Bhumjaithai party headquarters in Bangkok last month.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said he would not comment further whether the suspects handed over today are real suspects fleeing to Cambodia at the moment but would wait and see.
He said Cambodia is Thailand’s neighbour and Thailand must act with caution. It is possible Cambodia wants to thaw ties with Thailand, he added.
The two detainees are suspected of hiring persons to carry out bomb attacks near the Bhumjaithai party headquarters, the main coalition partner in the six-party government.
A bomb built into a fruit-vendor's cart was remotely detonated near the Bhumjaithai party on June 22, seriously wounding Anek Singkhuntod. He allegedly admitted that he was hired to leave the rambutan pushcart near the party office.
Mr Suthep added that the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) will finalise Monday evening which areas where an emergency decree will be maintained or lifted and will propose to the Cabinet for consideration on Tuesday.
“There are movements of several groups who try to create untoward incidents. I cannot say now how many provinces will be maintained under the emergency decree because CRES must assess the situation from reports of the relevant agencies,” said Mr Suthep. (MCOT Online news)
