Thai PM: Cabinet to consider lifting emergency decree in some provinces

BANGKOK, July 4 (TNA) - Thailand's Cabinet on Tuesday will consider lifting the emergency decree imposed in the capital and a number of other provinces since April 7 in response to anti-government protests, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Sunday.

Mr Abhisit said in his weekly TV and radio address that the Cabinet will discuss a possible lifting of the emergency decree in some areas it deemed no longer needed, while easing conditions could be done for provinces where the decree would be maintained.

Some human rights groups, private sector and the main opposition Puea Thai Party have called on the government to lift the decree, especially as a by-election will be held in Bangkok late this month.

Mr Abhisit said the government’s eventual target is to lift the emergency decree, which has also been enforced in the three troubled southernmost provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat some five years ago, but the government must be certain it has some tools available to ensure that peace will be maintained after the decree is lifted.

Stressing that there is no political pressure in the government plan to lift the decree in certain areas, he said law enforcement must, however, be efficient. (MCOT online news)
