Pakistan FM on defiant mood on Iran gas line

Islamabad, July 4, IRNA -- Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has been in a defiant mood on Iran gas pipeline project, insisting that nations resist pressures.

“Nations do face pressures and difficulties but they resist pressures in pursuit of national goals. If the nation is clear and united, you can resist,” Qureshi said when he was asked in a function in Multan about the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project on Saturday.

“You should resist,” was the next answer of the Foreign Minister while responding to a question from veteran industrialist Khawaja Yousuf on Pak-Iran gas agreement and nuclear power plants projects involving China’s assistance.

He said no one in the world wanted Pakistan to emerge as nuclear power but the country kept moving forward despite facing hardships like Pressler Amendment, imposed by the U.S. on Pakistan for its nuclear programme in early 1990s.

The Minister stressed on shunning the blame game and underlined the need for facing challenges with unity pleading: “We have indigenous resources to overcome energy crisis.”

According to an assessment, Pakistan has the potential to generate 30,000 to 40,000 megawatt of hydel power, he said. Even if we consider reservations of the stakeholders on some hydel power projects, Pakistan can still produce at least 10,000 to 15,000 megawatt of hydel power that will be sufficient to overcome existing shortfall of 5,000 megawatt”.

He also mentioned two gas pipeline projects including Pak-Iran gas line and Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan gas pipeline to utilize gas for power generation./end
