Iran commemorates martyrs of 1988 US plane attack

Tehran, July 3, IRNA – The spot in the Persian Gulf where an Iranian passenger plane was targeted by a US navy ship 22 years ago was showered with flowers Saturday morning.

Families of the martyrs of the incident as well as a number of local and national officials were present in the ceremony.

The governor of Hormuzgan province where the incident happened said the US conducted the horrible crime to reveal its all-out support for the toppled Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq.

Hossein Hashemi further described the savage attack on the plane which was carrying 290 defenseless people as a case of state terrorism that proved the hollowness of America’s claims for human rights.

An American warship called USS Vincennes targeted an Iranian Airbus A300 plane on July the 3rd, 1988.

The American warship targeted the plane which was traveling from Badar Abbas in southern Iran to the UAE with two missiles killing 290 aboard, many of them children under 12 years of age.

At the time, Iran was involved in an extensive war with Iraq's Saddam Hussein which was heavily backed by the West especially the US./end
