45% more Bangkokians predict 2010 FIFA World Cup champion

BANGKOK, July 3 -- Some 44.9 per cent more people living in the Thai capital of Bangkok have joined a contest organised mostly by newspapers to predict who will emerge winner of the 2010 FIFA World Cup being held in South Africa compared to the previous World Cup four years ago, according to a report issued by Kasikorn Research Centre.

The leading think tank conducted a survey between June 4-18 and found that 2.58 million people in Bangkok predicted who would be their favourite teams in the 2010 FIFA World Cup compared to 1.78 million for the previous World Cup 2006 in Germany.

The sharp increase in those interested in making a prediction resulted from a growing Bangkok population and the telecast live of matches from South Africa to Thailand which is not too late for viewers here, it said.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup began June 11 and is scheduled to end on July 11.

Expenses involving the prediction which is organised by several local media, newspaper and firms totaled approximately Bt965 million, the report said. Most expenses went to postal cards.

The increase in the number of people vying for prizes which will be given away to those who made the winning predictions will benefit companies and products which are sponsors for the event, the report said.

Besides that their images will be boosted further, it added. (MCOT online news)
