Lebak, Banten, Indonesia, July 19 (ANTARA) - Death-row convict Usep alias Tubagus Yusuf Maulana, a shaman who killed eight people whose money he promised to multiply, was executed by a firing squad in Lebak district, Banten, at 10,30 pm Friday night.
"Usep was declared dead ten minutes after he was shot at 10.20 pm," Rangkasbitung District Court Chief Reni Arinanny said Friday night.
She said Usep was executed at an undisclosed place in a palm oil plantation in Cimarga sub district, Lebak district, Banten.
His body was handed over to his family in Cikareo village to be buried.
Tubagus Maulana Yusuf was sentenced to death by the Rangkasbitung district court March 8, 2008 for premeditated murder of eight people in Tangerang district.
His victims had come to him as he was reputed to be a shaman able to multiply money.
Usep killed the victims during rituals held in an oil-palm plantation. The victims were given a drink believed to contain potassium.
After the victims lay helplessly, Usep killed them by burying them. He murdered five of his victims on June 22, 2007, and three others on July 19, 2007.
After killing his "patients", he took the money they were carrying to be multiplied which amounted to Rp20 million per person, Reni Ariyanny said.
In the meantime, two other death-row convicts, Mrs Sumiasih (59) and her son, Sugeng (44), were also executed by firing squads in East Java at 0.20 am on Saturday.
"The two death-row convicts were picked up at East Java's Medaeng State Penitentiary at 11.51 pm on Friday and executed at 0.20 am on Saturday," the head of the East Java Higher Prosecutor's Office, H Purwosudiro, said.
He said that the execution was conducted in East Java Regional Police's square.
"We departed from the Medaeng prison at 11.51 pm on Friday and arrived at the firing location at 0.05 am on Saturday. A five-minute ceremony led by the East Java Prosecutor Office head was held," he said.
Sumiasih and Sugeng were sentenced to death by the Surabaya district court on January 19, 1989 for premeditated murder. They, in cooperation with Sumiasih's husband and son-in-law, carried out a plot to kill Marine Lt Col Purwanto, his wife, his two children and his nephew over an unpaid debt. Sumiasih's husband died of natoral causes in prison and her son-in-law was executed a few years ago.
The two convicts' appeals were rejected in 1995.
