Melbourne struggles to reach 10 degrees

Melburnians shivered through the coldest day in almost two years and the chilliest
June day in a decade as the mercury struggled to get past 10 degrees.
The city was on track to stay under the 9.9 degrees recorded on August 21, 2008 but
the temperature reached 10.3 degrees just after 4pm and then dropped again.
And spare a thought for Ballarat - it endured its coldest day in 10 years with the
temperature reaching just 5.1 degrees.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Michael Efron said the wind-chill made the
temperature seem even lower.
"It's really making it feel a lot colder than the temperature is actually showing,"
he said.
"The air mass is so cold and with this cloud cover persisting, there's no chance for
it to warm up.
Senior forecaster Peter Newham said the coldest places in the state were the ski
resorts Mt Hotham and Falls Creek, where the temperature stuck around minus five all
day.
But Mr Newham said while there was no snow at the resorts on Tuesday, some was
expected in the next couple of days.
If you wanted warm, then the far east of Victoria at Mallacoota, Orbost and Gabo
Island were the places to be with the temperature reaching 14 degrees.
"That was because the north-westerly winds coming off the Great Dividing Range left
a clear spot and there were no clouds there," Mr Newham said.
Melbourne will warm up on Wednesday with a top of 12 forecast, while Ballarat is
expected to reach eight degrees.
