Pakistan Prime Ministers visit to strengthen ties with United States

Islamabad, July 18 PPI: The relations between Pakistan and the United States are in mutual interest of both countries and visit of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani to U.S. later this month will strengthen ties.

Talking to Pakistan Television, Foreign Office spokesman Mohammed Sadiq on Friday said visit would help remove certain misunderstandings and economic, defence and technical relations gain further momentum.

The prevailing economic conditions in the country under impact of global rise in
prices of energy and food stuff are ``of course a matter of worry for the present
government. This will come under discussion during the visit.'' Sadiq said overall
general trend of relations is positive and cooperation is increasing in all areas.

He said border violations and build-up of NATO forces along the frontier is ``a
serious matter. The government of Pakistan has already raised this issue at various
forums. It will also be discussed with U.S. authorities during Prime Minister's
visit. It is issue of Pakistan's sovereignty and would be at top of agenda.''

The spokesman said neither U.S. nor the world community has taken serious note of
recent anti-Pakistan accusations by Afghan President Hamid Karzai over the bombing
of Indian embassy in Kabul. Soon after incident, allegations were levelled against
Pakistan even before nature of attack and number of casualties known, he stated.

There is 2500km porous border between Pakistan and Afghanistan and it is almost
impossible to ensure 100 percent check on cross-border movement of undesired
elements. It is joint responsibility of Pakistan, Afghanistan and coalition partners
to play their role. It is inappropriate to expect from Pakistan to ensure fool-proof
check on movement of undesired people in isolation, he stressed.

Sadiq said there would rarely be a border in the entire world where routine crossing
takes place at such a large level. Pakistan sincerely extended number of suggestions
to tighten check on cross-border movement but other side never responded seriously,
he observed.

``The fact is that leadership in Afghanistan is in habit of issuing statements and
they never talked about practical steps to overcome problem,'' he stated.
