Court rejects bail for 10 detained Red Shirt leaders

BANGKOK, June 29 (TNA) – Thailand's Court of Appeals on Tuesday dismissed bail requests for 10 detained Red Shirt leaders charged with terrorism, citing the brisk of their possible flight from prosecution.

The court reasoned that the terrorism charges carry a maximum penalty of death as it is considered a public threat. There is possibility that the detainees might flee to escape prosecution if they are temporarily freed.

Karom Palaklang, a lawyer representing the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) or the Red Shirts, filed bail requests to the court on Friday for the ten incarcerated Red Shirt leaders.

Mr Karom said he would collect evidence and await the results of the DSI investigation before attempting again to seek bail for the 10 Red Shirt leaders.

Five UDD leaders -- Dr Weng, Kwanchai Praipana, Wiputhalaeng Pattanaphumthai, Yotwawaris Chuklom (also known as Jeng Dokchik), Korkaew Pikulthong -- and one UDD guard, Amnart Inthachote, are being detained at Kong Prem Prison on terrorism charges.

The lawyer wanted them to be moved to Bangkok Remand Prison where three other UDD leaders -- Veera Musikapong, Natthawut Saikua and Nisit Sinthuprai -- and Red Shirt guards Sombat Makthong and Phumkitti Sukchinda are being detained on the same charges.

Mr Karom said he would petition the director-general of the Corrections Department on Wednesday seeking permission to detain all the 10 Red Shirts under the same roof. (TNA)
