TURKISH SCHOLAR ELECTED MEMBER IN UN ANTI-DISCRIMINATION COMMITTEE

UN (A.A) - 29.06.2010 - A Turkish scholar has been elected a member to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.
Feride Acar, a professor of political science at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, received 132 votes to stand in the 12-member committee for the 2011-2014 period. Acar was the third to receive the most votes among 21 candidates.
Out of 186 state parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), 184 of them participated in the election. 
Acar served on the Committee from 1997 to 2004 and she was the chairwoman in 2003-2004. Acar became a professor in 1994 and she was the founder and chairperson/director of the first degree-conferring graduate programme in Gender and Women's Studies in Turkey, at METU. 
Acar has published and lectured extensively on women's human rights, and been an advocate for gender equality and implementation of the Convention in Turkey and around the world.
