Court rejects bid for temporary release of Red Shirt co-leader
BANGKOK, June 29 (TNA) – Thailand's Criminal Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition seeking the temporary release of detained Red Shirt leader Korkaew Pikulthong to open a bank account for campaign expenses in the upcoming Bangkok by-election, saying there is insufficient cause.
Lawyer Karom Ponthaklang representing the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) filed the complaint at court Tuesday morning as
the Election Commission (EC) requires, within three days after the registration of the candidacy, and copies of the candidate's bank account with not over Bt1.5 million in deposits to run the election campaign.
Mr Karom earlier said he will go to the Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES) Tuesday afternoon seeking permission for Mr
Korkaew’s financial transaction for the by-election and urged the lifting of the emergency decree in Constituency 6.
Mr Korkaew, charged with terrorism together with many of his fellow Red Shirt leaders, is now being detained and denied bail at Bangkok Remand
Prison.
He has been selected by the Opposition Puea Thai Party to run in the by-election in Constituency 6 to fill the vacant seat of late Democrat MP Thiwa Ngernyuang who died of cancer on June 11.
Mr Korkaew, temporarily released by the court, registered his candidacy Monday at Klongsamwa district and received number 4, while his main rival
Democrat candidate Panich Vikitsreth received number 1.
However the court dismissed the petition saying the petition is groundless as the EC regulations do not require that the contestant must open the
bank account in person, but instead states that the contestant should appoint an accountant to send copies of the bank account to the commission
on his behalf.
The UDD lawyer said after the court’s decision that he will ask the EC whether the bank account could be opened under another name or he may ask bank officials to visit the prison to acknowledge the account opening so that Mr Korkaew will not lose his rights.
Mr Karom said he will meet with his legal team regarding Mr Korkaew after appealing the bail request for other ten Red shirt leaders last Friday, but the court has not yet made a decision. (TNA)
