BDR-BSF Sector Commander level flag meeting held on Chapainawabganj frontier

RAJSHAHI, Bangladesh, July 19 (BSS)-An emergency Sector Commander level flag meeting between Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and Indian Border
Security Force (BSF) was held today on Roghunathpur frontier in
Shibganj of Chapainawabganj district where the BSF shot dead two
BDR soldiers last midnight.

The meeting took place adjacent to border pillar No. 4/4 from
2.30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the wake of killing of the BDR personnel.
DIG Sidhu of Berhampur BSF sector led the Indian side.

Talking to BSS over telephone BDR, Rajshahi Sector Commander
Colonel Iqbal, who led the Bangladesh side, said his counterpart
at the meeting expressed regret over their ignorance about the
killing.

In the meeting, Col Iqbal said, "We have placed the statement
that a BSF patrol party intruded into the Bangladesh territory
and shot dead two BDR men without any provocation."

He said we asked the Indian team to agree with a joint
investigation into the incident and a press conference if they
had any doubt about the BSF attack. But, the BSF side didn't
respond to the proposal. However, the BSF agreed to work with the
BDR for maintaining a peaceful border in future.

Meanwhile, the BRD held a press briefing at its
Chapainawabganj Battalion Headquarters tonight. In the briefing,
the detained Indian civilian-Tajamul, hailed from Malda district,
narrated the BSF's firing incident.

Tajamul, who was with the BSF soldiers on a boat that
entered the Bangladesh territory during the attack, said two of
the BDR soldiers on their patrol boat died when the BSF opened
fire after being challenged by the Bangladeshi boarder guards. He
said the BSF intruded into Bangladesh with two boats.

The Indian citizen further said the BSF troops left the scene
by a speedboat abandoning one of their engine-run boat inside
Bangladesh after nearly half an hour gunfight that erupted with
BDR retaliation.

BDR Sector Commander Col Iqbal and other BDR officers
attended the press conference.

Meanwhile, the BDR have been kept on a high alert along the
frontiers
