Project to develop Ussuriysky Island in coop with China approved.

KHABAROVSK, June 25 (Itar-Tass) -- The Russian Economic Development
Ministry has approved the Bolshoi Ussuriysky Island project, the
Khabarovsk Territory's government said on Friday.
The council of experts on regional investment policies has recommended
the project for implementation on the basis of state and private
partnership within the format of joint Russian-Chinese development of the
island.
The cost of the project to develop the Russian part of the island
totals 20.5 billion roubles, including 12.2 billion for infrastructure
expenditures.
The project is planned to be carried out stage by stage for six years,
a government source said.
The main objective is to open a new tourist area in Russia's Asian
part in the format of "one island-two countries" with the island's unique
geographic and political position taken into account.
It is envisaged to set up a tourist complex, an economic cooperation
centre, housing and infrastructure complexes and medical facilities.
About 1.5 million tourists are expected to visit the island every year.
Earlier, Russia and China approved a programme to develop cooperation
between northeast Chinese provinces and Russia's Far Eastern, Trans-Baikal
and Siberian regions for the period till 2018.
