Gillard tells of emotion in Rudd dumping
Prime Minister Julia Gillard says Kevin Rudd showed emotion after the Labor Party
ended his leadership.
Mr Rudd shed a tear on Thursday as he addressed the media following a leadership coup.
Talkback radio callers and ALP members are upset at the way the former prime
minister was ousted.
Asked about this, Ms Gillard said it had been an emotional week.
"There's been hurt this week, obviously, Kevin Rudd exhibited emotion (on
Thursday)," the prime minister told Network Ten.
"I expect some parts of the community are reflecting that."
Earlier, she told reporters in Canberra that Australians had seen the hurt felt by
Rudd, describing it as a "very, very difficult" day for himself, his family and
friends.
The former prime minister's nephew Van Thanh Rudd announced on Friday he would
challenge Ms Gillard in her Melbourne seat of Lalor as a candidate with the
Revolutionary Socialist Party.
"We need to make a stand against the policies of the Labor government and Julia
Gillard is a member of the Labor Party," the artist told ABC Radio.
"I chose the seat of Lalor because it's quite close to where I live and it also
represents to us an increase in migrants and asylum seekers, refugees who move to
Australia."
He made headlines earlier this year for dressing up in a Ku Klux Klan hood on
Australia Day to protest against violence directed at Indian students.
