Al-Qirbi in Cairo on Sudanese President crisis
SANA'A, July 18 (Saba)- Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi is
going to head next Friday to the Egyptian capital Cairo to attend a
meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers due to be held on Saturday.
Well-informed sources said on Thursday that the meeting would
discuss the Dutch-based International Criminal Court
(ICC) move against Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.
The Arab Ministers will review ways of letting Sudan's President
dodge the ICC's Darfur war crimes charges.
ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo has filed 10 charges against
al-Bashir related to a campaign of extermination the U.N. says has
claimed 300,000 lives and driven 2.5 million people from their homes.
Moreno-Ocampo, based at The Hague, Netherlands, said survivors are
preyed upon by government-backed janjaweed Arab militia and regular
troops. It could take judges months to rule on whether to issue an
arrest warrant.
President Ali Abdullah Saleh has telephoned al-Bashir to express
support, calling the indictment a grave and unacceptable
interference in Sudan's internal affairs and in the affairs of all
Islamic and Arab countries.
