NU TO ORGANIZE INT'L CONFERENCE OF ISLAMIC SCHOLARS

Jakarta, July 18 (ANTARA) - Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia's largest socio-religious organization, will organize the third International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) here on July 29- August 1 to discuss conflicts in Muslim countries.
At the four-day meeting, the NU executive board would try to make a portrait of cases in such conflict-stricken countries as Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon and Sudan, NU General Chairman Hasyim Muzadi said on Friday.
"We will study each of the cases by inviting speakers from the relevant countries. By doing so, we will have a better knowledge of actual problems and pictures," he said.
The conference will be participated in by representatives from 48 countries, including ulemas, intellectuals, observers, and non-partisans. Islamic figures, such as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi are expected to be present.
In addition to identifying models of resolutions on conflicts in Muslim countries, the conference would also draw up a road map for future peace, Muzadi said.
The conference would also offer models of conflict-preventing strategies based on Muslim countries' experiences and draw up strategic steps of achieving peace through ulemas' and Muslim intellectualls' contributions, he said.
"We hope that at the conference ulemas and Muslim scholars would adopt common perception of the cases faced by Muslims and of the way to deal with them," he said.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to open the third ICIS to be held at Borobudur Hotel here.
