Australia doesn`t bully E Timor: Horta
East Timor's President Jose Ramos-Horta says Australia doesn't bully his fledgling
nation over oil and gas.
In fact, sometimes its the reverse.
"Some think that Australia, when it comes to oil and gas in the Timor Sea, bullies
East Timor," Dr Ramos- Horta told an audience at Sydney University on Thursday.
"I dispute that. From my personal involvement in the situation, largely we have
obtained what we wanted.
"If anything, I think it's sometimes Timor-Leste that bullies Australia and often we
get away with it, we get away with it because of the many friends that we have in
this country."
In a meeting with former prime minister Kevin Rudd in Canberra on Monday, Dr
Ramos-Horta asked Australia to stand up for East Timor in its dispute over a gas
plant in the Timor Sea.
East Timor wants the gas piped onto its shores to provide jobs, while a Woodside-led
consortium wants to avoid going onshore by using a floating platform.
