Iranian Parliament speaker considers insults as an affront to Majlis

TEHRAN, June 23 (MNA) – Majlis Speaker Ali Rarijani has stated that holding the parliament in contempt runs contrary to the ideals of the Supreme Leader.

In response to a Majlis bill regarding Islamic Azad University, which if approved by the Guardian Council, would allow the endowment of the university’s properties for public purposes, a number of university students along with a group of MPs convened outside Majlis on Tuesday to voice their opposition to the bill.

The protesters shouted slogans claiming that the parliament has deviated from the ideals of the Islamic Revolution and those of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, an accusation Larijani perceives as a direct affront to the Majlis.

In a speech addressing MPs on Wednesday, Larijani stated that “Those who organize such gatherings should know that their behavior would not lend any support to the Supreme Leader.”

A number of slogans that some Basiji students chanted on Tuesday were not in line with Islamic behavior and the well-being of the country at all, he noted.

The MPs applauded the parliament speaker for his remarks.
