Thai foreign minister clarifies Thailand’s political situation to French counterpart

PARIS, June 22 (TNA) – Visiting Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya clarified Thailand's political situation to his French counterpart and signed a pact to strengthen bilateral cooperation between
the two countries.

On an official visit to Paris in France from June 20-21 to strengthen economic, trade and investment ties, Mr Kasit met his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner, and explained the political situation in Thailand: that Thailand is a democratic society and the Thai government is stable and adheres to democracy.

If anyone violates the law, Mr Kasit explained, he must be brought into the justice without exception and intervention.

The Thai foreign minister said Mr Kouchner accepted that there was confusion in France regarding Thailand’s situation despite a Thai government letter sent to clarify the situation. However, Mr Kasit's
visit to France improved the French understanding of Thailand's political and social complexities.

The French foreign minister also explained ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra’s stay in France and consequently Thailand understood more about it, Mr Kasit said.

The two foreign ministers also signed a second Thai-French joint plan of action for bilateral cooperation on economy, politics, education, technology and security.

France thanked national flag carrier THAI Airways International for purchasing seven French Airbus jetliners.

Mr Kasit asked France to transfer technology related to aviation to Thailand and proposed that it become Asia’s maintenance hub by using Don Mueang Airport or U-Tapao airport.

Mr Kasit also met Francesco Bandarin, United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Assistant Director-General for Culture, saying that the Thai-Cambodian conflict over Preah Vihear temple will not obstruct cooperation between UNESCO and
Thailand on science, education and culture.

He also met officials at the Thai embassy, saying that the government was determined to solve the political conflict amid attempts by other countries to intervene Thailand’s internal affairs as mediators.

However, the government set up several fact-finding panels and is proceding with its plan to build reconciliation. It has stability in its administration and is not failing as claimed by some.

Mr Kasit asked Thai officials to learn about French development in several fields such as economy, science, technology and fashion as well as good governance. (TNA)
