MONTSAME DIRECTOR MEETS WITH TURKISH AMBASSADOR
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ The Director-General of the MONTSAME national news agency and Vice-President of the United Confederation of Mongolian Journalists (UCMJ) T.Baasansuren met Monday with Mr. A.Asim Arar, the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Mongolia.
The Ambassador expressed a gratitude to the agency for quickly reporting activities of the 3rd Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) that took place in Turkey, and emphasized the participation of the Mongolia's delegation in the summit led by the President Ts.Elbegdorj and the Foreign Minister G.Zandanshatar.
At the meeting, the Turkish Ambassador gave a detailed report to Mr. Baasansuren on an attack from the Israeli side to a procession of the "Freedom Flotilla" humanitarian mission convoy's ships which were carrying relief goods in the Gaza Strip. According to Mr. Arar, Israel carried out the military operation early morning of May 31, 2010 against the six ships which carried humanitarian assistance goods and some 600 passengers of 34 countries in the international water--the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, and then condemned the attack.
The Ambassador mentioned Israel has illegally holds a blockade in the Gaza Strip, violating the 1860th resolution of the UN Security Council, and underlined that the ships aimed to deliver humanitarian assistance to people in the confined area. Mr. Arar added that these ships carried construction materials, clothes, foods, medicines, medical equipment, school supplies and toys for children, and there were not fire arms.
The Turkish side has issued a note on the Israel's attack on Gaza aid convoy. It says that due to the attack from the Israeli side to these ships, nine people died, of them eight ones are Turkish people and a Turkish born U.S citizen. This grave incident which took place against a Turkish-flag carrying vessel, in the high seas, (72 nautical miles away from the nearest coast to be exact) is a blatant violation of international maritime law and also clear breach of freedom of navigation at international waters, as well as the principle of safety of navigation.
The note also states that the Turkish side deems it is imperative that a clear and resolved response to this aggressive violation must be given under international law and its established institutions. The unacceptable attack not only created problems between Turkey and Israel, but also was strongly condemned by the majority of the international community.
The UN Security Council issued a Chairman's Statement calling for an impartial, international, creditable investigation. In addition to it, the UN Human Rights Council condemned the attack.
The Ambassador said that it is expected that Israel will accept its responsibility, will formally apologize to the families of the deceased and the wounded and will compensate the families, the NGO's and shipping companies to full extent. Mr. Arar expressed a hope that the MONTSAME agency will truthfully deliver the information about the attack to the public.
In his turn, Mr. Baasansuren thanked the Ambassador for giving the report, and said the agency had quickly reported the incident in that time. He promised to deliver again the incident with the Ambassador's comment to the public.
Taking the advantage, Mr. Baasansuren put forward his request to the Ambassador to develop cooperation between journalism organizations of the countries in frames of widening of the Mongolia-Turkey relations and cooperation. Mr. Baasansuren spoke about his visit to the Turkey's Union of Journalists paid in 1995.
The Ambassador accepted the request, and promised to convey Mr. Baasansuren's request to the Turkey's Union of Journalists.
