Army chief summons 83 blacklisted individuals, companies to DSI
BANGKOK, June 21 (TNA) - Thailand's army chief has signed an order summoning 83 persons and companies whose accounts have been frozen on suspicion of financing the Red Shirt protests to report to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) from June 28-July 31, DSI chief Tharit Pengdit said on Monday.
Speaking after a meeting of the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES), Mr Tarit said Army chief General Anupong Paochinda, in his capacity as head of the centre, has signed the order asking those 83 individuals and persons to report to the DSI with evidence to prove their innocence.
He said DSI will summon those on the name list from June 28 onwards to report to investigators.
Under the order, financial institutions are required to submit additional documents of those 83 persons to the DSI if asked, Mr Tharit said, adding that his agency needs at least 60 days to conduct an examination.
The result will then be reported to CRES and the cabinet. Any person or company, if found guilty, will face criminal charges, he said.
Among those 83 individuals and companies are 23 family members of fugitive ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, 23 politicians, 15 businesspersons, 17 protest leaders of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, five retired senior military officers and police officers.
The DSI chief said he could not disclose the money trail for fear of tampering with or impeding the investigation, but affirmed that the investigators had substantial grounds to carrying out the investigation.
Even though CRES will cease to exist in future, it will not affect any future criminal prosecution, he said. (TNA)
