Iran downgrades UN sanctions

Tehran, June 21, IRNA -- Iran on Sunday downgraded the U.N. sanctions over the national nuclear program after it challenged the Security Council resolution 1929 as illegal.
Iran says the veto-wielding powers at the UN Security Council have violated the Charter of the United Nations by passing the anti-Iran resolution.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has done nothing wrong consistent with Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Safeguards Agreement of the International Atomic Energy Agency, so the Security Council resolution 1929 runs counter to the Charter of the United Nations.
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Sunday that the UN resolution is politically-motivated which has been the outcome of the cold war era literature dating back to 1960s-1970s.
Mottaki made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Senegalese Foreign Minister Madicke Niang.
“Our righteousness and strong logic are encouraging for the other nations. Iranians will maintain their rational and just stand,” Mottaki said in reference to the national perseverance to support the nuclear program.
He criticized the US President Barack Obama for sudden shift of policy concerning Iranian agreement on fuel swap brokered by Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Tehran.
"The reaction of US president concerning the Tehran Declaration scored negative point for his term in office. It added new pages to the numerous mistakes he committed as the US president," he said.
On Iran-Senegal relations, Mottaki said that the Islamic Republic of Iran attaches importance to the status of Senegal in its foreign diplomacy and the two nations are looking for a promising future.
Iran and Senegal are determined to broaden the scope of economic cooperation in commerce, implementing joint projects, construction of oil refineries, power houses and auto manufacturing units, envisaging consular services, adopting preferential tariffs, banking and financial cooperation, Mottaki said.
The Senegalese foreign minister said for his part that the Islamic Republic of Iran has many friends in the world and such pressure and illogical anti-Iran measures will produce nothing.
The Tehran Declaration on fuel swap should be considered as a base in the upcoming talks with the West on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, he said.
"The Senegalese leadership is determined to broaden and deepen all out relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran."
He said that scope of relations between the two countries should expand beyond mutual and regional cooperation and Senegal as the gate for west of Africa is to spare no efforts to this effect.
Senegal is willing to cooperate with Iran in various fields such as construction of roads, housing, and implementing projects on water and electricity, he said.
Highlighting Iran’s capabilities and potentials in education and health, he called for benefiting from Iran’s invaluable experiences in the sectors.
IRNA economic correspondent said that the 4th Iran-Senegal Joint Economic Commission chaired by the Iranian minister of agriculture Jihad was held in Tehran on Sunday./end
