Iran: UNSC loses legitimacy, needs restructuring

Tehran, June 20, IRNA -- The United Nations Security Council has lost legitimacy by following the US lead so that the international community must take action to restructure the body to ensure international peace and security.
Head of Iran's Majlis Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Saturday that currently the United States is using the world body for its political objectives.
"United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has lost its credibility among the world nations and the body requires to be restructured."
Speaking to IRNA, he said that the UNSC, as a decision-making body on global developments, has turned to an instrument for the US policymakers.
Boroujerdi said that the US enjoying the veto privilege has trampled upon the charter of the United Nations and that the US has used the privilege 60 times in the past decades to back the Zionist regime despite all crimes and atrocities perpetrated against the oppressed Palestinian nation.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has vehemently ruled out the UNSC's resolution 1929 as illegal pursuing political agenda.
Boroujerdi expressed concern over the current status of the UNSC which damaged its prestige and capability to restore global peace and security.
"In practice, the UNSC proved that it lacks the credibility to maintain security and rights of all nations," he said.
Boroujerdi said that Iranian Majlis has ratified a bill to back the country’s achievements consistent with the national nuclear program and the plan to produce nuclear energy.
He said that the bill has dealt with a point of the UNSC resolution and stipulated that the Islamic Republic of Iran reserves the rights to retaliate inspection of its ships./end
