DUSHANBE, June 18 (Itar-Tass) -- A package of agreements was signed
upon results of talks, which were held on Thursday in the format of
Tajikistani President Emomali Rakhmon's visit to the Xinjiang Uygur
Autonomous Region of China, the press service of the Tajik president said
on Friday.
After a meeting between the Tajik leader and Secretary of the
Communist Party's Xinjiang Uygur Committee Zhang Chunxian in the major
city of the autonomous region Urumqi, the two sides signed several
documents, including an intergovernmental agreement on development of
bilateral cooperation, and an agreement between the Tajikistani state-run
Barqui Tojik energy company and Chinese TBEA corporation on the
construction of a 220-kilowatt electric transmission line, which will link
two points in the neighbouring countries, the press service said.
"The intergovernmental agreement envisages stepping up of the
long-term economic cooperation, as well as a joint response to the global
threats," the press service said.
"As for the second document, the two sides agreed to build the
electric transmission line in the next 18 months," the press service said,
adding that the project cost is estimated at 36.9 million U.S. dollars.
Tebian Electric Apparatus Stock Co., Ltd. (TBEA) is China's major and
one of the world biggest producers of transformers.
During the talks, Rakhmon and Zhang expressed satisfaction with the
development of comprehensive cooperation between the two countries,
stressing that a third of bilateral trade accounts for the Xinjiang Uygur
Autonomous Region, the presidential press service said.
The two sides expressed confidence that launching of the year-round
work of the Kulma-Karasu border passage (which is currently operating 240
days a year) will make it possible to increase in times trade and economic
cooperation between China and Tajikistan, the press service said.
The interlocutors highly assessed the role of China's companies (the
biggest part of which are registered in the autonomous area) in the
implementation of projects in the spheres of energy, industry, transport,
communications, and development of natural resources in Tajikistan.
They voiced interest in the stepping up of closer interaction in
agriculture, including cotton growing and drop irrigation, the press
service said.
Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is the biggest region of China. It
occupies a territory of over 1.6 million square kilometres. The autonomous
region borders Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan,
Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. It has abundant oil reserves. Xinjiang
Uygur is China's largest natural gas-producing region.
