Indian foreign secretary to visit Pakistan next week
Islamabad, June 19, IRNA -- Indian Foreign Secretary will visit Pakistan on June 24 for bilateral talks, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.
“On the invitation of Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir, the Indian Foreign Secretary, Ms. Nirupama Rao, will visit Islamabad for bilateral talks scheduled to take place on 24 June 2010,” a Foreign Ministry statement said.
The talks will be held ahead of talks of foreign ministers of the two countries scheduled in Islamabad for July 15.
Sources said that the two foreign secretaries will finalize agenda for the meeting of the foreign ministers.
Indian Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram, too, will travel to Pakistan later this month for attending a multilateral meeting of interior ministers of South Asia.
In case Chidambaram travels to Islamabad, it would be the first ministerial visit to Pakistan since May, 2008 when the then External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee had gone for talks as part of composite dialogue. Things worsened after the Mumbai terror attack on November 26, 2008.
Chidambaram will meet his Pakistani counterpart Rehman Malik to discuss the ongoing Pakistani investigations and trials in the Mumbai attack case, sources said.
The home ministers meeting will be attended by ministers from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and is expected to discuss regional cooperation for dealing with the menace of terrorism, narcotics and organised crime.
The first such meeting was held in Dhaka on 11 May 2006 followed at New Delhi on 25 October 2007./end
