PRESIDENT OF PONTIFICAL COUNCIL VISITS AZERBAIJAN STATE COMMITTEE FOR WORK WITH RELIGIOUS ASSOCIATIONS

Baku, June 18 (AzerTAc). Chairman of the Azerbaijan State Committee for Work with Religious Associations Hidayat Orujov has met President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi.
Orujov praised the level of tolerance in Azerbaijan, saying care for and respect to citizens` right to freedom of religious belief was among key priorities for the government.
“Throughout history Azerbaijan has never seen conflicts on the basis of national and religious discrimination. National leader Heydar Aliyev played a significant role in preserving and strengthening this tradition. Today, President Ilham Aliyev successfully continues this policy.”
Orujov said: “Christian temples are being repaired and reconstructed across the country. Several years ago President Ilham Aliyev inaugurated a Roman Catholic Church in Baku.”
Ravasi described Azerbaijan as “one of the world`s open Muslim countries.
“We praise the traditions of tolerance and want to make it known to the Catholic world. Respect and government care to religions and tolerance towards representatives of different religions in your country can be an example for other countries.”
