KPK ASKED TO BUG PHONES OF HOUSE INQUIRY COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Jakarta, July 17 (ANTARA) - A number of legislators called on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to bug the telephones of all members of the House's Fuel Oil Price Hike Inquiry Committee to prevent them from deviating from their intended mission under pressure from external parties.
The call was made by four House members who were the prime movers of the House's initiative to conduct an inquiry into the government's policy to increase fuel oil prices last May. They were Yuddy Chrisnandi, Maruarar Sirait, Rama Pratama and Ganjar Pranowo.
Speaking at a discusssion themed "Wither Fuel Oil Price Hike Inquiry?" here Wednesday, they warned the House Inquiry Committee not to yield to pressure from anybody, including oil industry players.
To prevent the committee from straying from its intended misssion, they called on the KPK to monitor the dealings of the committee's chair and members by placing bugs on their telephones.
They said being the original proponents of the House's inquiry they bore the moral obligation to see to it that the House inquiry was carried out in accordance with "the pure objectives of a House inquiry."
"The House's inquiry must be watched over, not only by the public but also by non-governmental organizations and the KPK so that it does not get derailed," they said.
The KPK should eavesdrop on the telephone conversations of the chair and members of the House Inquiry Committee "because the potential of it being subverted is so big." Chrisnandi said.
The committee's chair and members were likely to be exposed to "temptations" from oil business players and pressure from the government, he added.
"The committee must reject any kind of external intervention, and if it does not, the committee's chairman must resign," he said.
The House Inquiry Committee's chairman, Zukifli Hasan, who took part in the discussion , said he would carry out his duties to the best of his capabilities. "I will not tolerate pressure or intervention by anybody. I will step down , if I cannot meet this commitment," he said.
