Defence names missing sailor

Defence has named a sailor missing believed drowned on Tonga as Leading Seaman
Combat Systems Operator Andrew Wakely, aged 28.
It said Leading Seaman Wakely, from Bentley in Western Australia, was swimming at a
beach on the western side of Tonga on Wednesday morning when fellow crew members
notified senior authorities that he had possibly drowned.
A Seahawk helicopter was immediately launched from his ship, the Anzac frigate HMAS
Warramunga but his body couldn't be found.
At first light on Thursday, an air and sea search resumed using the Seahawk plus a
Tongan Defence Services patrol boat. Tongan police searched local beaches.
"The body of Leading Seaman Wakely has not been recovered at this time. The search
will resume tomorrow," defence said in a statement.
Defence said the Navy and Defence Community Organisation was supporting Leading
Seaman Wakely's family.
HMAS Warramunga was conducting a scheduled Port Visit to Nuku'alofa, Tonga at the
time of the incident and remains there supporting the search effort.
