Six anti-government leaders detained separately from 5 others for safety reasons
BANGKOK, June 16 (TNA) - Six anti-government Red Shirt leaders on Wednesday were detained separately from another five fellow leaders and guards for safety reasons, the corrections department said this morning, while the group's lawyer will appeal to the courts later today to overturn their bail bid rejections.
Corrections Department director-general Chartchai Suthiklom said the Criminal Court earlier ordered the detention of 11 Red Shirt leaders and guards at the Bangkok Remand Prison, but there are many people detained there for violating an emergency decree.
For safety reasons, six protest leaders, including Weng Tojirakarn, Kwanchai Praipana and Korkaew Pikulthong, will be transferred to Klong Prem Central Prison, while another five including Veera Musikapong, Natthawut Saikua and Nisit Sinthuprai remain at the Bangkok Remand Prison, Mr Chartchai said.
The director-general added the detainees are allowed to meet only 10 people during one 20-minute visit daily. The visitors however are required to must inform their names and must be approved by the detainees.
Mr Chartchai said he has instructed prison commanders to ensure security for 11 Red Shirt leaders and guards to avoid any untoward incident, saying group detention is recommended to facilitate the security measures.
Mr Chartchai also warned the 11 detainees not to make any political comments in the prisons as there are large numbers of prisoners who may have different points of view on politics.
Red Shirt lawyer Karom Ponthaklang will meet the 11 Red Shirts at prison today asking them to sign bail bid documents before filing an appeal to the Appeals Court.
Criminal Court on Tuesday rejected a bid for bail for eight Red Shirt leaders and three Red Shirt guards, citing concerns over possible flight to evade prosecution or incarceration, as the detainees face charges with severe punishment.
The Red Shirt leaders have been charged with terrorism after their protests to demand House dissolution which began since March 14 turned deadly with sporadic grenade, bomb and shooting incidents, leaving at least 89 dead and nearly 1,900 wounded.
Mr Karom earlier told reporters he will seek the bail request again Wednesday afternoon. (TNA)
