TURKISH PARLIAMENT SPEAKER ON TURKEY'S "NO" VOTE IN UN SECURITY COUNCIL
TEHRAN (A.A) - 15.06.2010 - Turkey's parliament speaker said on Tuesday that Iranian executives appreciated Turkey's "no" vote to UN Security Council resolution imposing a fourth round of sanctions against Iran.
Turkish Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin, while commenting on how Iran responded to Turkey's 'no' vote in UN Security Council's resolution pertaining to Iran, said that Iranian officials assessed the 'no' vote as Turkey's upright position. Sahin said the Iranian officials said it was above every kind of appreciation.
Sahin said he met senior Iranian officials including Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, as well as Foreign Minister Manuchehr Motaki.
"We have explained them why Turkey gave 'no' vote. First, we have a principled stance. Secondly, Turkey thinks that dialogue and diplomacy are the only ways for solution of problems. Iranian officials repeatedly stated that they appreciated Turkey's stance," Sahin said.

Asked to comment on Nuclear Swap Deal which Iran signed with Turkey and Brazil, Sahin said, "Iranian parliament speaker and president made similar comments saying that the three countries (Iran, Turkey and Brazil) told something new to the world. Iran said it wants solution of problems through peace and justice. This declaration is a living mechanism and still on the table."
Sahin said he attached importance to such stance of Iran, adding that western countries, the United States and permanent members of the UN Security Council should consider Iran's approach. "Approach of Iran on those matters, particularly uranium enrichment is noteworthy. Especially countries having the right to veto in the UN should seriously take into consideration Iran's statement that it is willing to resolve the problems through peaceful methods and that it supports the declaration signed in Tehran."
"Those who criticize us should assess their criticisms well. Turkey does not have any goal but to restore peace in its region and the world. The whole world should know this well. The three countries (Turkey, Iran and Brazil) said something new to the world on May 17. I would like to state requirement of leaving aside cliche policies and uttering something new," Sahin said.
When asked to comment on discussions on "axis shift" in Turkey's foreign policy, Sahin said assuming a principled stance and favoring solution of problems through dialogue and diplomacy can not be expressed as "axis shift".
Sahin underlined that particularly the geography where Turkey was located needed peace, "peace can only be restored by discussing the problems and establishing dialogues. Turkey prefers this."
The resolution imposing a fourth round of sanctions against Iran had earlier been approved with 12 'yes' votes, two 'no' votes from Brazil and Turkey, and one abstention from Lebanon.
