Ex-German chancellor rips Israel's settlement policy

Berlin, Jun 15 IRNA -- Former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder here Monday lashed out at Israel for its controversial settlement policy, saying it is not helpful for promoting bogged down Middle East peace process.
Speaking on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Berlin-based German Orient Institute, Schroeder stressed that "extending Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem is definitely not" the way to achieve peace in the Mideast.
He urged the Jewish state "to re-open all crossings in and out of Gaza for humanitarian aid, commercial goods and civilians."
Schroeder reiterated Europe's "fundamental interest in stability and peace in the Near and Middle East."
Solving the Middle East conflict is "an essential part" of this interest, he added./end
