Medvedev to visit Severodvinsk to see the launch of new submarine.
MOSCOW, June 15 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is the commander-in-chief of the Russian armed forces, will on Tuesday attend a ceremony of launching the Severodvinsk nuclear submarine in the dockyard of the Sevmash defence plant in the town of Severodvinsk.
Medvedev's first visit to Severodvinsk was in 2009.
The Severodvisnk is a multipurpose nuclear submarine of the fourth
generation designed by the Malakhit design bureau in St. Petersburg.
The submarine's construction began in 1993. Experts working at the
Sevmash dockyard explain why it took so long to finish the job. There are
several reasons such as economic hardships, a fundamentally new
architecture of the hull and modern weapons.
Vice-Admiral Oleg Burtsev, the deputy chief of the Russian Navy
General Staff, said that the nuclear submarine would undergo test trials
this coming summer. The Russian Navy will receive the first Severodvinsk
submarine in 2011. There are plans for the construction of six more
submarines after the first one begins operation.
The Severodvinsk nuclear submarine has no analogues in Russia or
abroad. According to open sources, its hull is made of high-strength
steel. It is equipped with buoyant rescue chambers for the entire crew.
Besides, the submarine is equipped with a new Ajax integrated sonar system
and its nuclear power unit meets all contemporary nuclear safety standards.
The missiles are deployed in eight launchers. The weapons kit
includes supersonic cruise missiles and deep-water self-guided torpedoes.
The vessel has the latest communication and navigation means, a
fundamentally new nuclear power unit and a jet propellant instead of a
screw. The conning tower has a well-rounded shape and the submarines solid
hull is divided in ten compartments. For the first time in the history of
Russian shipbuilding torpedo launchers will be located behind the central
compartment and the sonar antenna will be installed in the nose section.
The Severodvinsk submarine is 120 metes long. Its water displacement
ranges from 8,600 to 9,500 tons.
The Sevmash plant began the construction of a second submarine of the
fourth generation, the Kazan, in July 2009 when Medvedev visited
Severodvinsk for the first time. He then demanded that modernization of
the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier be completed as soon as possible. It'
s expected to be handed over to the Indian Navy in 2012.

region has called for peace and respect between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks
communities.
