Pakistani lawmaker rejects UN sanctions on Iran

Islamabad, June 13, IRNA -- Pakistani law maker on Saturday strongly rejected the United Nations (UN) Security Council's fourth round of sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme.

Talking to IRNA, Senator Lt. Gen (R) Javed Ashraf Qazi of Pakistan Muslim League-Q and former education minister said that it was a very unfair move and depicts the discriminatory treatment of the western world.

“Why don’t they stop Israel from carrying out barbaric activities? Why is Israel developing its nuclear programme without any monitoring”, he asked.

Javed Ashraf said that Iran has been assuring the world that its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes and it would not be channeled towards nuclear weapons.

Iran being the signatory of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) can use nuclear energy for peaceful means yet US and west have been suspecting on Iran’s nuclear program saying that Iran is trying to build an atomic bomb, which Iran has strongly denied.

The Pakistani politician opined that Iran is a responsible state and should be given chance. He said that the sanctions were unjustified as the Islamic Republic has already entered into a nuclear swap deal with Brazil and Turkey.

“I strongly believe that the fresh round of sanctions on Iran is a move to sabotage all these steps through which Iran’s nuclear issue can be resolved peacefully”, said Senator Javed Ashraf.

The legislator expressing his views said the policies of west against Iran have always remained unfair.

Replying to a question, Javed Ashraf Qazi said that US doesn’t want to see a nuclear power in the Persian Gulf that can be a threat to the existence of Israel.

He maintained that the US and Israel are afraid of Iran's power and its political and spiritual influence in the region.

“US attacked Iraq only because it had become a threat to Israel, US wants to maintain hegemony of Israel in the Middle East”, said the law maker.

To a question, Javed Ashraf Qazi said UN sanctions should have no effect on Pakistan-Iran relations. He stressed the need for early completion of gas pipeline project.

He was of the view that Pakistan should not bow down to the US pressure saying that history proves friendship of US is temporary./end
