MILLI MAJLIS VICE-SPEAKER MEETS STRATFOR CEO

Baku, June 11 (AzerTAc). First vice-speaker of Azerbaijan`s Parliament Ziyafat Asgarov has met today CEO of the Stratfor Global Intelligence Center George Friedman.
Asgarov briefed Friedman on the workings of the Milli Majlis and ongoing reforms in the country on promotion of democracy and protection of human rights.
He noted Azerbaijan attaches significant importance to the European values.
Asgarov pointed out relations between Azerbaijan and the United States had reached the level of strategic partnership. “We share the same position on issues of mutual interest.”
According to Asgarov, Azerbaijan and the U.S. show a united front in counter-terrorism operations and establishment of peace across the world. “But Azerbaijan itself suffered from terrorism,” said Asgarov, adding “Armenia occupied 20 percent of the country`s territories, and forced over a million Azerbaijanis from their original lands”.
He added official Yerevan, violating the principles of international law, does not honor relevant documents adopted by international organizations, including the UN and Council of Europe.
Asgarov also expressed regret that the OSCE Minsk Group`s co-chairs, including the U.S. turn a blind eye to this fact.
For his part, George Friedman said the purpose of his visit to Azerbaijan was to get the information about the country.
He said “Azerbaijan is a rapidly developing country, but protraction in settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict impedes this development”.
Friedman said Azerbaijan`s role enhances not only in the South Caucasus region, but entire world. “Azerbaijan is an important country and strategic partner for the United States.” On the contrary, he added, Armenia loses its prestige gradually, and the country is not important for the United States.
