JAPAN INVESTORS CONSIDER RI'S ELECTRICITY CRISIS TEMPORARY PROBLEM

Tokyo, July 14 (ANTARA) - The Japan-Indonesia Business Association of Kansai (JIBAK) considers the electricity crisis in Indonesia a temporary problem that will be solved by the Indonesian government soon, a spokesman said.
"We see it as a matter that will be solved by the Indonesian government soon. We even already see the concrete efforts being made by the Indonesian government to overcome the crisis," the chairman of JIBAK, Hajime Kinoshita, said here Wednesday.
Kinoshita made the remark in response to complaints made by Japanese businessmen about the power crisis in Indonesia. The businessmen said they had sufferred financial losses of up to billions of rupiah besides damage to their industrial machines by the power outages.
"From the business perspective, the electricity crisis should be solved quickly and we are optimistic Indonesia can overcome it," Kinoshita added.
He admiited the electricity crisis in Indonesia was affecting promotions Indonesia conducting in Japan on trade and investment opporunities. However since both countries had agreed to develop their cooperation in these two fields, there was nothing to worry about. Moreover, the two countries had already signed an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), he added.
"The promotional efforts should be continued as Japanese businessmen also want to know the latest developments in Indonesia's policies to reform its economy," he said.
Meanwhile, the commercial attache at the Indonesian embassy in Tokyo, Tulus Budhianto, said trade and investment cooperation with Japan should be viewed in a long term perspective as the EPA between the two countries entered into effect only last July 1.
The Indonesian embassy will hold a seminar and exhibition in Tokyo this week from July 17 to 19, 2008 in the Shinjuku area. The seminar is to explain Indonesia's latest policies on economic reforms. The exhibition, themed "Little Indonesia in Japan", would serve as evidence of the trade and investment prospects for both countries.
Japan - Indonesia trade in 2007 reached a value of 35.5 billion US dollars consisting of 10.6 billion dollars from the oil and gas sector and 24.9 billion US dollars from other sectors.
Up to April 2008, total bilateral trade was worth 14.5 billion US dollars with 5.3 billion from the oil and gas sector, and 9.2 billion from other sectors.
