PYONGYANG, June 11 (Itar-Tass) -- The executive committee of the UN
World Food Programme /UN WFP/ adopted a plan of humanitarian aid to the
Democratic People's Republic of Korea /DPRK/ on Friday.
The representative office of the WFP in Pyongyang said that from July
1 of the current year till July 30, 2012, the organisation will send over
157,000 tonnes of food worth 60 million dollars. The aid will be forwarded
to women and children first of all.
The implementation of the plan of aid for 2.5 million Koreans will
depend on donations from donors, the source said.
The main target of the programme is to supply food for pregnant and
nursing women and children who usually eat only rice and other cereals,
potato and pickled vegetables and thus lack proteins, fat and vitamins.
The UN WFP will send over oil, soy beans, sugar, iodised salt and food
mixes.
Till lately, about 1.5 million Koreans have been recipients of this
aid, and the situation has improved since the 1990s.
"We are ready to build up the humanitarian aid, but in the long run
everything will depend on financial donations from donor countries," a
source at the UN WFP representative office said.
Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Italy and Cuba are among
the expected donors, the source said.
