Deputy PM Suthep urges Red Shirts to join national reconciliation plan

BANGKOK, June 11 (TNA) - Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban on Friday urged the anti-government 'Red Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) to join the national reconciliation plan as proposed by Prime Minsiter Abhisit Vejjajiva in order to achieve the goal to restore peace to the country.

Mr Suthep said the anti-government groups should not view compatriots having different views as their opponents. They should join the prime minister's national reconciliation plan and express their feelings and what they want the government to do.

All sectors should join the plan as the premier had sincerely invited the public to join forces and is ready to listen to the view of all people, the deputy prime minister said.

In a nationally televised address on Thursday, Mr Abhisit urged all Thais to join his reconciliation and reform efforts and said he was confident that the national reconciliation road map will be complete by the year end.

Mr Abhisit said the reconciliation process will solve the problems and reform structures which may take longer than the tenure of his government, but he wants to have a clear plan within this year in order to get the country out of the crisis and violence and to become a New Year's gift for the Thai people.

The prime minister's five-point national reconciliation plan comprises upholding the monarchy, resolving fundamental problems of social injustice, enabling media's constructive operation, establishing the facts about the violence by an independent fact finding committee and establishing mutually acceptable political rules.

Mr Suthep also denied the accusation that the Abhisit government has pulled out all the stops to eliminate Red Shirt supporters as claimed by Jatuporn Prompan, an opposition Puea Thai Party MP and a prominent leader of the Red Shirt group.

Mr Suthep's comment came after Mr Jatuporn said he expressed concern regarding the death of a local Red Shirt movement leader killed by gunmen on Wednesday night in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Sakrin Kongkaew also known as Uan Buayai, 24, a Red Shirt leader in Nakhon Ratchasima was shot dead in that province's Buayai municipality. He was earlier summoned to report to the authorities at Suranaree army camp on May 2 for his role in the anti-government protest.

Police said the motive behind the killing was presumed to be linked to personal or political conflict.

Mr Suthep said that Mr Jatuporn always blamed the government even though the Abhisit government had not even considered any attempt to kill anyone, but only wanted to bring the wrongdoers to justice.

He pledged that there would be no hunt down of Red Shirt protesters and that the police would investigate Mr Sakrin's case to find the gunmen. (TNA)
