Large youth groups gathering on Osh outskirts despite curfew.
BISHKEK, June 11 (Itar-Tass) - Large youth groups continue to gather
on the outskirts of the second largest city of Kyrgyzstan Osh where a
state of emergency was introduced and curfew imposed on Friday,
eyewitnesses of developments in the "southern capital" of the republic
told Itar-Tass. According to them, the situation has calmed down in the
centre of the city, however, the situation remains tense.
Mass disorders started in Osh on Friday after skirmishes in the centre
of the city between youth groups. After the clashed the pogroms of shops,
arsons of buildings and cars started in the city. Police tried to disperse
the clashing sides suing special equipment, including stun grenades. The
events took place mainly in the central part of Osh. Later the clashes
spread to the area of the major Kara-Suu market in the Fergana Valley.
According to preliminary information, there have been casualties. The
eyewitnesses claim that young people injured in the disorders are being
admitted to the city hospitals.
During an emergency meeting of the republic's interim government the
cabinet members introduced a state of emergency in Osh, the district
centre Uzgen, as well as in the Kara-Suu and Aravan districts, and a
curfew imposed in the period from 20:00 p.m. to 06:00 a.m. Military
equipment and Interior Troops forces have been brought in the city on the
alert. First Deputy Interior Minister Bakytbek Alymbekov has been
appointed commandant of the city of Osh.
