Giant whale `stranded` in Brisbane CBD

A giant blow-up whale has surfaced in front of Brisbane's town hall to make it
impossible for locals to miss the start of the whale watching season in nearby
waters.
The humpback whale measuring 16 by 8 metres, accompanied by a calf, bobbed up in
King George Square to promote the season, which runs from June to November.
Cathie McBean from Brisbane Marketing said on Thursday the stunt was a fun way to
let residents know how easy it is to get up close and personal with the marine
giants.
"While this particular whale and calf is not the first official sighting for the
region, we wanted to highlight to residents and visitors that they can observe these
beautiful animals without travelling far," Ms McBean said.
"Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island are two of the best locations in
Australia for whale watching."
About 16,000 humpback whales will migrate north over the next six months.
