Aussie nurse dies in Peru
A travel adventure has ended in tragedy for a young Australian nurse who died in
Peru from altitude sickness an hour after phoning her family.
Gold Coast Hospital nurse Alicia Parks, 24, spoke to her mother and sister an hour
before she collapsed and died in her Lima hotel on May 22.
She was due to return to the Gold Coast on Saturday but now her father and brother
face the grim job of escorting her body back to Australia from Lima.
A memorial service will be held for her on Friday when she will be honoured for her
adventurous spirit and big heart, the Gold Coast Bulletin reported.
The family hope the tragedy will increase awareness about the dangers of altitude
sickness.
Ms Parks suffered severe headaches and pains in her legs before she died.
