Security, fighting terrorism, Kyrgyzstan are on SCO summit agenda.
ASTANA, June 9 (Itar-Tass) - General security issues, fighting
terrorism, the situation in Kyrgyzstan and relations with international
organisations will be on the agenda of the SCO /Shanghai Cooperation
Organisation/ summit in Tashkent on June 10-11, the Secretary General of
the SCO Muratbek Imanaliyev said in an interview to Kazakhstan's Kazinform
news agency.
"The general security problems in the territory of the SCO members and
their neighbouring countries, including the Afghanistan problem, are
topical for all member nations," he said. "The national leaders demand the
SCO Secretariat and the RATS /Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure/
strengthen their activities in this field."
"The summit will discuss fighting terrorism, extremism and separatism,
i.e. the three evils, as well as the problem that has emerged lately - the
drug trafficking."
The situation in Kyrgyzstan is a "sensitive problem for the
Organisation," he said
"The principle position of the Organisation and its members" is that
"Kyrgyzstan was, and will also be a full-fledged member of the SCO", he
explained. "All the member-states will provide economical and humanitarian
support to Kyrgyzstan, and they try to help it enter the legal space of
settling problems and stabilising the situation in the country."
The participants in the summit will discuss relations with
international organisations, and first of all those with the United
Nations Organisation.
"We are establishing contacts with various divisions of the UN,
including with those fighting terrorism and drug crimes," Imanaliyev said.
"I am happy to announce that on April 5 we signed a joint declaration on
cooperation between the Secretariats of the UN and SCO."
"As for the relations between the SCO and the OSCE, I believe that
this issue requires additional research, though we do have certain
potential for contacts and consultations."
Imanaliyev commented on procedures for new members which are expected
to be approved by the national leaders in Tashkent.
"This is a framework document which states basic parameters for new
members," he said. "The framework document would need detailed criteria,
notions and many political, economical, financial and other aspects, and
all these documents will be worked on after the summit."
