Health Watchdog takes preventive measures against poliomyelitis.
MOSCOW, June 9 (Itar-Tass) - The Federal Supervision Service for
Public Health and Social Affairs has been taking preventive measures
against transmission of the poliomyelitis virus into Russia.
The European regional Bureau of the World Health Organization has
reported 564 suspected poliomyelitis cases officially registered in
Tajikistan by June 1, 2010, the Russian Watchdog said.
Laboratory tests of samples taken from poliomyelitis-affected
patients and studied at the Chumakov Poliomyelitis Institute under the
Russian Academy of Sciences have identified the "wild" poliomyelitis virus
in 183 cases, with children under one year old accounting for 20.7 percent
of all the confirmed cases, children aged from 1 to 5 years old - 61
percent, from 6 to 14 years old - 12.5 percent and people older than 15
accounting for 6.6 percent. The poliomyelitis cases were predominantly
registered in Dushanbe, other areas under Tajik jurisdiction and in the
Khatlon region.
To prevent the wild virus from being transmitted to Russia preventive
and epidemiological measures have been taken, including joint systemized
work with the Federal Migration Service, a Military-medical department of
the Russian Defense Ministry, the Tajik Health Ministry, which includes
exchange of information and joint preventive measures.
Sanitary-quarantine control has been tightened over passengers
arriving from Tajikistan. Children under 15 have been vaccinated with
anti-poliomyelitis vaccine orally irrespective of their vaccination status.
Identification of poliomyelitis- infected Tajik citizens who arrived
in Russia, their vaccination and virus- screening have been organized.
Such people undergo health monitoring in places of residence. If
necessary, immunization of Russian children returning from Tajikistan is
made. Preventive measures include confiscation of dried fruit brought from
Tajikistan from retail and wholesale trade network.
