NA discuss name of ethnic groups and media Law
(KPL)The fifth session of the National Assembly, sixth legislature on its sixth day, discussed and considered the media law and the name of ethnic groups in the Lao PDR.
In the morning session under the chairmanship of NA's president Mr.
Thongsing Thammavong, Mr. Somphone Khayongek, Vice Chairman of Lao Front for National Construction has presented the draft to determine and name the ethnic group in the Lao PDR.
Mr. Somphone said that Laos is now 49 ethnic groups. This figure is based on the ethnicity research project conducted over the past nine years. 49 ethnic groups were classified in four groups of languages including Lao-Tay, Mone-Khamae, Hmong-Iewmian and Chinese-Tibetan.
In the afternoon session, Mr. Mounkeo Oraboun, Minister of Information and Culture has presented the new media law to the National Assembly session for discussion and consideration.
The drafted law consists of 10 chapters with 64 articles that define the principles, roles and duties of media organisations in performing their activities. It also provides for the establishment of Lao media offices in foreign countries and for the establishment of foreign media offices in Laos.
