Iran's President in Istanbul to attend CICA summit

Istanbul, June 8, IRNA – Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived at International Ataturk Airport Monday afternoon.
Upon arrival at the airport, President Ahmadinejad was welcomed by a Turkish minister, Istanbul governor general and mayor and Iran’s Ambassador to Turkey.
Head of Presidential Office Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie, President’s senior aide Mojtaba Samareh Hashemi, and Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki are accompanying the president in the visit.
Iran’s president is in Istanbul to attend the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).
Leaders of several Central Asian countries will arrive in Istanbul for the CICA meeting, that will be chaired by Turkish President Abdullah Gul.
Turkey will take over the rotating presidency of CICA from Kazakhstan.
CICA was established upon an initiative of Kazakh President Nazarbayev in 1992.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, Kyrgyz interim leader Roza Otunbayeva, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov and European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton are expected to attend the meeting.
The prime ministers of Oman, China, Cambodia and Jordan have also been invited to come to Istanbul.
CICA currently has 20 member states including Azerbaijan, Iran, Afghanistan, China, Egypt, India, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Palestine, South Korea, Russia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan.
Vietnam is soon expected to join as the 21st member./end
