Thai Commerce Minister meets Japanese business community to restore confidence in Thai economy

BANGKOK, June 7 (TNA) - Thai Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai met Japanese businesspersons in Nagoya, the third-largest incorporated city and the fourth most populous urban area in Japan, to restore Japanese investor confidence in the Thai economy following the violent riot in the kingdom last month.

Nagoya is the capital of Aichi Prefecture and is one of Japan's major ports.

Apart from Nagoya Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman, Mrs Porntiva met representatives from automobile business, financial and banking sector and local retailers in the city.

After the meeting, the minister said that the Japanese still regard Thailand as a potential production base investment and still see Thailand as a gateway to the markets in the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and East Asia.

Mrs Pornthva had met Noritada Mitsubayashi, President of Yamamori, a successful producer of Japanese sauces, seasonings and instant foods.

The company has been selling Thai instant foods in Japan since 2000 and enjoyed 70 per cent of market share in Thai instant food in Japan.

Yamamori briefed the Thai commerce minister on its recommendations on the market situation and opportunities as well as the competitiveness of food products in the Japanese market.

The ministry will consider the recommendations to improve and promote Thai food products in Japan in the future.

Yamamori has a factory in Chacherngsao and its products receiveds award from Monde Selection of the International Institute for Quality Selections based in Belgium in 2008-2009.

The company is also eyeing greater investment in Thailand.

Mrs Porntiva has been in Japan to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Trade Ministers meeting in Sapporo, Hokkaido, on June 5-6 to review their past efforts and future direction toward freer trade and investment, marking the start of a series of APEC ministerial meetings to be chaired by Japan this year.
