SOUTHEAST EUROPE SHOULD NOT BE STUCK TO PAINFUL PAST, TURKISH PARLIAMENT SPEAKER

ANTALYA (A.A) - 07.06.2010 - Turkey's parliament speaker said on Monday that southeast Europe should not be stuck to the painful experiences, conflicts and hostilities of the past.
Turkish Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin attended the opening of the 8th conference of parliament speakers of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) in the southern province of Antalya.
Speaking at the gathering, Sahin said southeast Europe was a region with great significance for Turkey.
"Even though we do not have a geographical border with southeast Europe, we accept ourselves as the neighbor of all the countries in this region," Sahin said.
Noting that Turkey considered the establishment and survival of peace and stability in the Balkans as a foreign policy issue with top priority, Sahin said stability of the Balkans was an indispensable requirement for peace and security in Europe.
"We believe a powerful atmosphere of integration and solidarity can turn our region into a centre of attraction. If we achieve that, we can make a remarkable contribution both to regional and global relations," he said.
Pointing to the history of the Balkans, the Turkish parliament speaker said, "We should not be stuck to the painful experiences, conflicts and hostilities of the past. With a constructive approach, we should intensify efforts to provide our nations with a peaceful and stable atmosphere".
Sahin also noted that Turkey closely followed the developments in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and it attached great importance to the preservation of the peaceful atmosphere in this country as well as progress of its integration process with the EU and NATO.
Sahin said the tripartite consultation mechanisms set up between Turkey & Serbia and Turkey & Bosnia-Herzegovina thanks to the efforts of Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu would also have important functions within that framework.
Commenting on the recent Israeli raid against ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza as well, Sahin said he one more time condemned the attack that had killed 9 volunteers and wounded many others.
The conference of parliament speakers of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) brings together parliament heads of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Turkey and Greece.
The conference will end on Tuesday.
