Iran's FM calls for OIC practical steps

Jeddah, June 7, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki Sunday evening urged the Organization of the Islamic Conference to take practical and effective steps towards lifting the Gaza siege.
He made the remarks in a meeting with OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu held on the sidelines of the OIC emergency Executive Committee meeting on Zionists’ crimes in Gaza.
Mottaki underlined the need for cessation of the Zionists atrocities in the occupied Palestinian lands, in the Gaza Strip in particular.
For his part, Ihsanoglu referred to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s regional role as very important and influential.
The Iranian foreign minister arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday to attend the OIC meeting.
According to media reports, early Monday morning in international waters, Israeli forces intercepted and took control of the six-ship aid convoy, which was carrying 10,000 tons of aid and hundreds of activists from several countries. At least 10 people were killed in the serious violence on one or more of the vessels.
The six-ship flotilla had 682 passengers from 42 countries.
Across the world, tens of thousands of people protested on the streets and several countries summoned Israel’s ambassadors.
The international community has called for an impartial inquiry into the Israeli assault./end
