Electoral ID changes 'too risky': Libs
Changes to Victoria's Electoral Act to relax identity checks for those enrolling to
vote in future state elections risk opening the system to vote-stacking and rorts,
the opposition says.
Victorian Attorney-General Rob Hulls is on Monday expected to announce a package of
reforms to the state's Electoral Act, similar to legislation already in place in
NSW, including a new move to allow people to vote without enrolling, using a
driver's licence or similar identification.
David Davis, the opposition's scrutiny of government spokesman, says this would mean
electoral rolls would no longer be closed several weeks before an election and would
allow voters to vote without being properly vetted by the Victorian Electoral
Commission.
"This will open up the potential for undermining the integrity of the electoral
rolls, voter stacking and rorts," Mr Davis said.
"In a close election it may affect the outcome and risk corrupting the election
process in Victoria.
"At the last election, half the 66,000 votes affected by John Brumby's sudden change
could have altered the government of Victoria."
With allegations of branch-stacking in sections of the ALP's Victorian branch, Mr
Davis said the government cannot be trusted on this issue.
