New airport opens in Russian Black Sea town

.

KRASNODAR, southern Russia, June 6 (Itar-Tass) -- A new airport opened
in the Russian Black Sea resort town of Gelendzhik on Satrurday.
Russian Deputy Transport Minister Valery Okulov, Dzhambulat Khatuov,
the first vice-governor of the Krasnodar territory, the town head Viktor
Khrestin and Sergei Likharev, the general director of the group of Cuban
airports "BazelaAERO" were present at the opening ceremony.
"The new airport in Gelendzhik is a unique event. In recent years
Russia has predominantly rebuilt and modernized old airports. The
Gelendzhik airport is the first to have been started from scratch," Okulov
went on to say.
The First Vice-Governor Dzhambulat Khatuov described the airport's
opening as historical for further development of the Russian Black Sea
resorts.
"Russian hasn't built airports for 25 years, and the one in Gelendzhik
is the first portent," Khatuov said. He thanked the Russian government for
allocating investments for the construction.
The last time the residents of
Gelendzhik heard the roar of aviation engines was in 2004 when the old
airport closed for repairs. However, it was then decided that a new
airport with a capacity of no less than 500, 000 people a year should be
built. The funds came from the federal budget and private investors. The
construction of a new runway and a new airport building cost 6 billion and
1.5 billion roubles, respectively.
The construction began in 2005.
The new runway is 3,100 meters long and 60 meters wide. It will be
able to receive planes even in bad weather.
A total of 2.8 million tourists spent their summer vacation in
Gelendzhik last year, and with the new airport - the number is set to grow
even further.
